About Eileen Gray: The Maverick of Modernism

Eileen Gray (1878–1976) was an Irish-born architect and designer, a true pioneer in a male-dominated field. She is best known for her ability to seamlessly blend Art Deco elegance with the emerging functionalism of modernism.

A self-taught innovator, Gray moved to Paris where she began working with lacquer and textiles before transitioning to furniture and architecture. One of her most famous projects is E-1027, a seaside villa on the French Riviera, which became a modernist icon.

Her work was under appreciated for decades, overshadowed by her male contemporaries like Le Corbusier. But in recent years, her genius has been rediscovered and rightfully celebrated—her furniture and lighting designs now occupy prestigious museum collections and discerning homes worldwide.
