Sculptural 1960s Danish floor lamp by Holm Sørensen, black wrought iron geometric frame, Amber glass blocks, square shade

A rare sculptural floor lamp by the Danish designer Svend Aage Holm Sørensen, from the 1960s. It is as much an art object as a source of light. A slim black wrought iron frame of crossing vertical and horizontal lines is built up like an abstract composition. It recalls De Stijl and the geometry of Frank Lloyd Wright. Set into it are rectangular blocks and round cabochons of hand-finished glass in warm amber and honey. The glass is thick and uneven, with natural bubbles and ripples that catch the light and glow when the lamp is on.

The tall, narrow stem rises from a solid square black base and carries a square shade in a warm, ochre textured fabric. The shade diffuses the light into a soft, golden ambient glow. The whole lamp is slender, so it fits easily in a corner, next to a sofa or beside a lounge chair, and its graphic character makes it a statement piece in modern, Scandinavian and mid-century interiors.

Handmade Danish craftsmanship, a strong architectural design and warm 1960s colours make this a distinctive collector's piece. It is a floor lamp that works as a sculpture even when it is switched off.

About Svend Aage Holm Sørensen

Svend Aage Holm Sørensen was a Danish designer and manufacturer who became known in the postwar decades for lighting and decorative objects. His company, Holm Sørensen & Co., was based in Asnæs, Denmark. It produced lamps in brass, wrought iron, leather and glass for homes and public interiors, and it exported widely. His work combines Scandinavian restraint with inventive, often sculptural detail. He used warm materials, careful craftsmanship and a playful sense of geometry, and he is now appreciated by collectors of Danish mid-century lighting for pieces that are more artistic than most mass-produced lamps of the period.
