Stilnovo mid-century floor lamp

This striking two-arm floor lamp was designed and manufactured by Stilnovo in Milan, one of the defining names of Italian mid-century lighting. It carries the original circular “Stilnovo Milano Italy” label to the socket housing, confirming its provenance. Standing an impressive H. 166 x W. 45.5 x D. 24 cm (H. 65.4 x W. 17.9 x D. 9.4 in), it makes a commanding statement in any room.

The lamp rises from a substantial circular base in cream lacquered metal — sprayed and cured in the manner typical of Italian lighting production of the period — its slender stem culminating in a candelabra-style fitting with two elegantly scrolled arms, each holding a light source. A whimsical wrought-metal flourish, reminiscent of a stylized figure or musical note, animates the central column between the two amber sconce cups, adding a playful sculptural counterpoint to the otherwise architectural silhouette. The original wide oval drum shade, entirely fabric, in a woven linen-textured cloth with a warm terracotta hue and braided trim, diffuses the light from the twin bulbs into a soft, ambient glow, while the exposed amber “candle” elements beneath give the piece the presence of a floor-standing chandelier.

Founded in 1946 by Bruno Gatta on the outskirts of Milan amid Italy’s postwar reconstruction, Stilnovo quickly became one of the country’s most influential lighting houses. Gatta and the brand’s head designer, Angelo Gaetano Sciolari, helped shape the visual language of mid-century Italian design, and the company’s work drew early praise from Gio Ponti in Domus, along with a silver medal at the 1954 Triennale and a Compasso d’Oro in 1955. Over the following decades Stilnovo collaborated with some of the most celebrated names in Italian design, including Ettore Sottsass, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Joe Colombo, and Gae Aulenti. This floor lamp, with its combination of lacquered metal, glass, and fabric, is a fine example of that spirit — equal parts function and craft.
