Mid-century modern Italian high-back chair by Pozzi & Verga, ebonized wood and nickel plated brass, 1950s

Pozzi & Verga sculptural Italian side chair with nickel finial, black lacquered wood, geometric upholstery

A slender, sculptural chair by Pozzi & Verga, a rare find for lovers of Italian mid-century design. The tall, pointed back is shaped like a lancet arch, with an elegant sweep that lifts the eye. It is crowned with a finely turned brass finial and finished with a horizontal rail pierced by three perfect circles. The black ebonized frame stands on turned, tapering legs with ball feet, which gives the chair a refined and almost architectural silhouette.

The seat is upholstered in a vibrant harlequin-pattern fabric in yellow, orange, red, teal and charcoal. It adds a playful contrast to the dark frame and brings the chair into contemporary interiors. It works as a statement chair in an entrance hall, as a dressing or desk chair, or placed at the head of a dining table. It also looks striking as a sculptural object on its own.

Italian craftsmanship, balanced proportions and a witty Neo-Liberty character make this a conversation piece. Available as a single chair or as a matching pair.

About Pozzi & Verga

Pozzi & Verga was an Italian design and furniture-making partnership of the 1950s and 1960s. They are known for elegant, elongated seating that combines ebonized or lacquered wood with brass details. Their chairs draw on the Italian tradition of light, slender chairs, such as the Chiavari chair. They reinterpret it in the spirit of the Neo-Liberty movement and the refined work of designers like Gio Ponti. Their pieces are valued for their graphic lines, fine detailing and playful proportions, and they are now sought after by collectors of Italian mid-century design.
