About Michael Lau:

Michael Lau (b. 1970, Hong Kong) is widely regarded as a founding figure of the designer toy movement. In the late 1990s he began customizing action figures with streetwear, hip-hop, skate and sneaker culture, which became his Gardener series (1999). It helped turn toys from mass-market products into collectible art objects. Crazy Children (2002) followed under his own label, Crazysmiles, and his work has been shown in galleries and museums internationally and paired with major fashion and sportswear brands.

About designer toys:

Designer (or "art") toys are limited-run figures, usually vinyl or resin, made by artists and designers rather than toy companies. The movement started in Hong Kong and Japan in the late 1990s and spread to the US and Europe. Values depend on edition size, artist, condition and completeness, and original packaging matters a lot to collectors.
