'Kumotatsu' Contemporary Japanese Woodblock Print by Nishijima Katsuyuki

This exquisite contemporary Japanese woodblock print, Kumotatsu (Clouds Forming), by acclaimed artist Nishijima Katsuyuki, captures a serene moment in a traditional Japanese townscape as clouds gather softly above tiled rooftops and quiet stone pathways.

Rendered in rich, layered colors and bold yet refined line work, the composition reflects Nishijima’s masterful balance between traditional ukiyo-e aesthetics and a distinctly modern sensibility. About the Artist — Nishijima Katsuyuki

Nishijima Katsuyuki (born 1945, Japan) is one of the most respected contemporary Japanese woodblock printmakers. He trained at Kyoto City University of Fine Arts and is widely recognized for revitalizing traditional printmaking through modern compositions, architectural clarity, and expressive color palettes.

Unlike many purely revivalist artists, Nishijima infuses his works with a graphic strength influenced by modern design, while remaining deeply rooted in classical Japanese techniques. His subjects often include historic streets, temples, rooftops, and quiet urban corners—places where time seems suspended.

His works are held in public and private collections worldwide and are highly sought after by collectors of contemporary Japanese prints.

About Japanese Woodblock Printing

Japanese woodblock printing, or mokuhanga, is a centuries-old technique requiring extraordinary craftsmanship. Each color in a print is carved onto a separate block of cherry wood, inked by hand, and printed sequentially onto handmade paper. Precision, patience, and collaboration between artist, carver, and printer are essential.

Contemporary masters like Nishijima Katsuyuki continue this tradition while expanding its expressive range. The result is work that honors Japan’s artistic heritage while remaining relevant to modern collectors and interiors.
