Jean Prouvé Grand Repos lounge chair
Vintage ObjectsJean Prouvé "Grand Repos" reclining lounge chair by Tecta, Germany, 1980s, blue & green leather and polished steel
A striking Grand Repos reclining lounge chair by Jean Prouvé. This example, produced in the 1980,s, was edited by Tecta in Germany, a manufacturer renowned for faithfully reissuing key works of twentieth-century design. Conceived around 1930, it is one of Prouvé's most sculptural designs and a landmark of modernist engineering. Sweeping cobalt-blue leather armrests curve down into a polished steel frame, framing a deep dark green leather seat and back with a matching blue leather headrest. The back reclines through multiple positions, so the chair adapts to the sitter: function first, with beauty as the result.
Prouvé's constructive approach, with its bent and folded metal and exposed mechanics, gives the chair a presence as both seating and sculpture. The saturated blue against the dark green leather and the cool sheen of the steel makes it a statement piece for a living room, library, or study, and a natural fit for collections of 20th-century design.

Jean Prouvé was a French designer, engineer, and architect, born in Paris and raised in Nancy, where his father Victor Prouvé was a leading Art Nouveau artist of the École de Nancy. Trained as a metalworker, he opened his own workshop in 1923 and founded the Ateliers Jean Prouvé in 1931. He called himself a "constructeur" and pioneered sheet-steel furniture and prefabricated architecture. His best-known works include the Standard chair, the Antony chair, the Compas table, the Maison du Peuple in Clichy, and the Maison Tropicale. After the war he served as mayor of Nancy. His work is held in major museum collections and is among the most sought-after in 20th-century design.
