This sculptural desk lamp is a striking example of Dutch mid-century lighting by Hala Zeist, one of the Netherlands’ pioneering lighting manufacturers, founded in 1932 in Zeist. The company built its reputation under design director H. Th. J. A. Busquet, whose functionalist, Bauhaus-informed approach to lighting design shaped Hala’s output through the postwar decades and earned the firm a lasting place in Dutch design history.
This model, part of the “Architect” desk lamp family, pairs a black lacquered conical housing with a brushed aluminum saucer-shaped shade, connected via a fully adjustable arm with a brass ball-joint hinge secured by a knurled locking ring — a refined mechanical detail typical of Hala’s engineering-driven aesthetic. The lamp pivots and tilts smoothly, casting light with precision whether angled down onto a desk or bounced upward for ambient illumination. Set on a solid, weighted round base finished in matte black, the lamp measures 46 cm (18.1 in) high, with a base diameter of 37 cm (14.6 in) and a shade width of 22 cm (8.7 in) — a substantial, confident presence for any desk or console.
