He opened his own studio and gallery in Kyoto in 1982, and by 1984 was himself teaching Seiji Sano, who became a noted printmaker in his own right. Ido’s work — prized for its nostalgic, idealized vision of gardens, temple grounds, and old streetscapes — is held in the collections of MoMA, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Kyoto and Tokyo National Museums, and the Florence Municipal Museum. Its name comes from Gio, a court dancer of the Heian period who won the favor of the powerful warlord Taira no Kiyomori, only to be cast aside for a younger dancer, Hotoke Gozen. Heartbroken, Gio retreated here with her mother and sister to become a nun — a story immortalized in the 13th-century epic \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Tale of the Heike\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. Remarkably, Hotoke Gozen herself later joined Gio at the temple in a gesture of reconciliation, and wooden statues of both women, along with Kiyomori, are still enshrined in the hall today.
