Carved in 1997 from Pietra di Vicenza, “Frammenti IV” is a striking abstract sculpture by Italian artist Alberto Cabiddu, whose totemic stone works bridge architecture and fine art. The piece stages a dialogue between raw, deliberately fractured stone at its crown and precisely faceted planes below — a stepped profile, a punched rectangular void, and a deep, sweeping arc carved into the block’s face. That contrast between the untouched, quarry-like edge and the crisp geometry beneath is the sculpture’s central tension: nature interrupted by intention.

Standing 32 cm (12.6 in.) high, 15 cm (5.9 in.) wide, and 10 cm (3.9 in.) deep, on a custom walnut base measuring 35 cm (13.8 in.) by 17 cm (6.7 in.) by 17 cm (6.7 in.), the sculpture reads differently from every angle — a quality Cabiddu builds into his totems, rewarding viewers who walk around the piece rather than fixing it to a single silhouette. The soft, warm tone and fine grain of the limestone catch light unevenly across its planes, animating the surface throughout the day.

Pietra di Vicenza is a prized Italian limestone quarried in the Colli Berici near Vicenza, in the Veneto — the same stone historically used in the region’s Renaissance architecture, including buildings by Andrea Palladio. Its soft, creamy palette and workable, medium-grain texture have made it a favored material for both classical construction and contemporary sculpture.

About the artist: Alberto Cabiddu was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1966 and discovered his artistic talent at age ten. After a youth more focused on music, his interest in drawing resurfaced in his late teens, taking him briefly to Paris before he returned to Geneva to study. In 1987, he relocated to the province of Vicenza, where he began working with local Vicenza stone, marble, wood, and clay — learning from sculptor Agostino Gallio and ceramicist Antonio Visentin, though he remains largely self-taught. Cabiddu spent decades developing his practice in relative privacy before beginning to share his sculptural work more widely, and today focuses on abstract, architecturally-inflected stone forms.
