His work explores the silent tension between light, space, and geometry, transforming everyday structures into timeless, almost meditative compositions.

In ‘En Route’, Molenaar depicts a nocturnal gas station reduced to its purest form—planes of color, crisp lines, and an uncanny stillness. The scene radiates both familiarity and estrangement, echoing the tradition of Edward Hopper while remaining unmistakably contemporary. The contrast between the stark illuminated canopy and the infinite blackness of the night imbues the work with a sense of solitude and passage, fitting for its title.

Molenaar studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten), founded in 1870 by King William III. This classic academy has long been a meeting ground for philosophers, academics, and artists—a crucible where ideas are tested and visions expanded. His works are part of prominent collections, both private and institutional. Collectors are drawn to his unique ability to distill complex architectural realities into images of calm intensity, where silence and structure reign.

This large-scale canvas (80 × 110 cm) exemplifies Molenaar’s mastery of reduction and atmosphere, making it an important addition for collectors of contemporary Dutch art and those interested in the dialogue between architecture and painting.

Signed and title on the back by the artist.

Colors may slightly vary due to photographic lighting sources or your monitor settings.

We ship worldwide.
