Katsujiro Terashi (Japanese, 1927–2015)

Woodblock Print on Paper

Dimensions: 34 × 44 cm (13.4 × 17.3 in)

Edition: E.A. (Épreuve d’Artiste / Artist Proof)

Signed in pencil lower right and bearing the artist’s red seal

This beautifully composed woodblock print by Japanese artist Katsujiro Terashi captures a serene view of the historic town of Kurashiki, renowned for its Edo-period architecture and picturesque canals. Created in 1976, the work exemplifies Terashi’s refined sense of structure and light—hallmarks of his distinctive modern style.

The image presents tiled-roof kura storehouses, an arched bridge, and the delicate silhouettes of winter trees, rendered in deep black ink against the natural tone of washi paper. The interplay between solid forms and intricate texture creates both atmosphere and depth, bridging traditional Japanese craftsmanship with a modern graphic sensibility.

This impression is particularly special as an Artist Proof (E.A.), retained by the artist outside the numbered edition. It is hand-signed in pencil and bears Terashi’s personal red seal. The sheet is in good vintage condition; the paper shows a slightly warmer, more yellow tone than in the photographs, consistent with age and adding to its authentic character.

About the Artist

Katsujiro Terashi (1927–2015) was a Japanese printmaker celebrated for his architectural landscapes and serene depictions of traditional towns. A member of the sōsaku hanga (“creative print”) movement, Terashi designed, carved, and printed each work himself—embodying the spirit of individual artistic expression that defined post-war Japanese printmaking. His prints are admired for their precise composition, craftsmanship, and contemplative atmosphere, reflecting a quiet dialogue between heritage and modernity.
