Fontana Arte model 2461 coffee table with rare etched glass top by Max Ingrand, Italy, 1960s

This Fontana Arte model 2461 coffee table has a rare, hand-etched glass top designed by Max Ingrand. The thick, bevelled glass carries a series of large and small kaleidoscopic rosettes in varying sizes. The patterns look like dahlias or sunflowers, and the fine radiating lines catch the light and appear to change with every angle. The glass rests on a sturdy frame of dark, richly toned wood with chunky square legs. Together, the glass and wood show the Italian mid-century taste for refined materials and artisanal craft.

The low, elongated proportions make this a striking centrepiece for a living room, lounge, hotel or boutique interior. It pairs well with Italian modernist, Scandinavian and contemporary pieces and works equally well as a sculptural object in a collector's interior.

About the designer: Max Ingrand (1908–1969)

Max Ingrand was a French glass artist, designer and architect-decorator, best known for his stained glass and his work in etched and engraved glass. After the Second World War he worked on the restoration and creation of stained glass windows for major French churches and public buildings. In 1954 he became artistic director of Fontana Arte in Milan, a post he held until 1967. There he designed celebrated lighting, mirrors, tables and glass objects, including the iconic 2364 and 2360 table lamps and the 2092 wall light. His work balances technical mastery of glass, a French sense of elegance and Italian modernism.
