Italian mid-century glass side table in the style of Fontana Arte, 1940s
Vintage ObjectsItalian mid-century side table in the style of Fontana Arte, etched glass and nickel-plated metal.
Sculptural and refined, this Italian side table from the 1940s is made in the manner of Fontana Arte, the Milanese house famous for its poetic use of cut and etched glass. A column of five ribbed, nickel-plated metal elements rises like a stack of beehives. Between the elements, four glass discs of graduated size float on the stem, and the whole stands on an engraved glass base secured with small metal studs.
The top is a generous round plate of thick, aqua-tinted glass, hand-etched with stylized leaves, cross-hatched petals and starbursts. A small etched glass flower sits at the centre, crowning the column and fixed with a hex bolt. The etched motifs continue on the discs and the base, so the table rewards close inspection from every angle, and the light plays beautifully through the layered glass.
The proportions make it a versatile piece. Use it as a side table next to a sofa or armchair, as a bedside table, or as a display stand in an entrance hall. The mix of green-tinted glass and warm nickel feels very Italian in the 1940s and sits comfortably in Hollywood Regency, Art Deco, Gio Ponti-inspired or modern interiors.
The table is in good vintage condition, with a lovely patina on the metal and light signs of age consistent with its period. Please see the photographs for details.
