An exceptional and highly decorative monumental Jugendstil vanity mirror by Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF), Germany, circa 1900–1910. Executed in silver-plated Alpacca, also known as German Silver or Nickel Silver, this rare and architecturally conceived dressing-table mirror represents the pinnacle of German Art Nouveau craftsmanship and design.

Alpacca is a premium alloy composed primarily of copper, nickel, and zinc. Despite its name, it contains no actual silver; however, its exceptional strength, durability, and lustrous appearance made it the preferred base metal for luxury silver-plated objects. Around 1900, WMF adopted silver-plated Alpacca as its standard high-quality production material for its finest Jugendstil decorative objects, tableware, mirrors, centerpieces, clocks, and artistic metalwork. The alloy provided a superior foundation for silver plating and allowed for the crisp casting and intricate detailing that became hallmarks of WMF’s internationally acclaimed Art Nouveau creations.

The elegant structure is characterized by the flowing, organic lines synonymous with the Jugendstil movement, culminating in a large circular tilting mirror framed by gracefully sweeping supports. Richly embellished with vibrant green, cobalt blue, and ruby-red  inlays, the design displays the refined combination of artistry and functionality for which WMF became internationally renowned at the turn of the twentieth century.

The lower section incorporates an integrated tray beneath a beautifully sculpted stylized mask, while finely chased ornamental details throughout demonstrate the exceptional quality of WMF’s metalworking. The harmonious interplay between the silver-plated Alpacca surface and the jewel-like colored inserts creates a striking visual presence from every angle.

The mirror is fully authenticated by its original factory marks. The reverse bears three WMF quality stamps, including the highly sought-after registered WMF Angel mark—a standing angel within an oval cartouche above the letter “A”, denoting superior silver-plated Alpacca production. In addition, the base is struck with two further Angel marks, providing a total of five WMF factory stamps, an exceptional level of documentation and authenticity rarely encountered on surviving examples. The Angel trademark remains one of WMF’s most recognized and collectible hallmarks from the Jugendstil era.

Presented in excellent condition, the piece retains its original mirror plate, crisp decorative details, vivid colored inlays, beautifully preserved. Its monumental scale and sculptural form make it equally suitable as a functional dressing-table mirror or as a statement work of decorative art.

A rare museum-quality example from WMF’s celebrated Jugendstil period, combining outstanding craftsmanship, exceptional preservation, impressive scale, and multiple factory marks that firmly place it among the finest surviving examples of German Art Nouveau decorative metalwork.

Founded in 1853 in Geislingen an der Steige, Germany, Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) became Europe’s foremost producer of luxury silver-plated and Art Nouveau metalwork.
