Educated at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, he has since worked in both London and Paris. His art is influenced by Pop Art. Adami was born in Bologna. In 1945, at the age of ten, he began to study painting under the instruction of Felice Carena. He was accepted into the Brera Academy (Accademia di Brera) in 1951, and there studied as a draughtsman until 1954 in the studio of Achille Funi. In 1955 he went to Paris, where he met and was influenced by Roberto Matta and Wifredo Lam. His first solo exhibition came in 1959 in Milan. In his early career, Adami's works were expressionistic, but by the time of his second exhibition in 1964 at Kassel, he had developed a style of painting reminiscent of French Cloisonnism, featuring regions of flat color bordered by black lines. Unlike Gauguin, however, Adami's subjects were highly stylized and often presented in fragments, as seen in Telescoping Rooms (1965). In the 1970s, Adami began to address politics in his art, and incorporated subject matter such as modern European history, literature, philosophy, and mythology. In 1971, he and his brother Giancarlo created the film Vacances dans le désert. In 1974 he illustrated a Helmut Heissenbuttel poem, Occasional Poem No. 27. Ten Lessons on the Reich with ten original lithographs {Gallerie Maeght}. In 1975, the philosopher Jacques Derrida devoted a long essay, "+R: Into the Bargain", to Adami's work, using an exhibition of Adami's drawings as a pretext to discuss the function of "the letter and the proper name in painting", with reference to "narration, technical reproduction, ideology, the phoneme, the biographeme, and politics". There were four retrospective exhibits of Adami's work between 1985 and 1998. They were held in Paris, the Centre Julio-Gonzalez de Valence (Spain), Tel Aviv, and Buenos Aires. In 2010, the Boca Raton Museum of Art devoted a special exhibit to Adami's paintings and drawings.

Importing Art into the United States is exempt from all U.S. tariffs but please, do check!

Title: “Balle e Balle” – Original Signed Lithograph by Kumi Sugaï, 1970 – Edition 52/100

Dimensions : Height : 62 cm (24.4 in) x Width : 50 cm (19.7 in)

Description :

Step into the world of bold geometry and captivating abstraction with “Balle e Balle,” a 1970 original color lithograph by renowned Japanese artist Kumi Sugaï (1919–1996). Best known for his Minimalist and Hard Edge geometric abstractions, Sugai was influenced by the relationships between Japanese calligraphy and Western typography. His paintings often featured a singular, centrally placed shape and a highly graphic aesthetic. Born in Kobe, Japan on March 13, 1919, he developed an interest in art a young age, initially enrolling at the Osaka School of Fine Arts in 1933 and later dropping out to work in commercial advertising during the Second World War. By 1952, Sugai settled in Paris, where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere and absorbed contemporary Western painting styles, including Abstract Expressionism and, later, Minimalism and Pop Art. At first, Sugai adopted traditional ukiyo-e woodblock techniques, using bright colors to create prints infused with avant-garde art influences. In the 1960s, however, he transitioned into painting and printing more geometric images of letters and directional signs. Before his death on May 14, 1996 in Kobe, Japan, Sugai achieved international success, participating in the Pittsburgh International five times between 1955 and 1970, and holding a major retrospective of his work at the Seibu Museum of Art in Tokyo in 1983.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0496/5230/1983/files/IMG_8251_82b29fac-a584-42f4-9a6c-019c6e7a6a3d.jpg?v=1750432002
traditional-japanese-wood-block-print-kikyo-by-masao-ido
Kikyo by Masao Ido 1989

This authentic 1989 Japanese woodblock print titled "Kikyō" (Balloon Flower) by Masao Ido is a rare and exquisite piece that embodies the essence of eternal love, sincerity, and elegance. After moving to Paris as a young man, he gained international prominence for his fluid, expressive line work and ability to distill haute couture and refined design into bold, dynamic compositions. His career spanned several decades and included collaborations with leading fashion houses, magazines, and cultural institutions. Gruau’s work — marked by spirited use of line, restrained palette, and an elegant modern sensibility — helped define the visual language of post-war fashion illustration and advertising. His imagery graced the pages of Vogue, Marie-Claire, Harper’s Bazaar, and became iconic brand campaigns for designers such as Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Givenchy, and others. Exhibitions of his work were mounted in major cities, and his legacy continues to influence contemporary illustration and design.

Edition & Print Information

This lithograph was produced in a limited edition of 300 — with a small number of artist proofs — and was carefully printed on high-quality fine art deckled-edge paper, reflecting the standards of premium printmaking of the late 20th century. The combination of pencil signature, edition number, and seal constitutes the full suite of authentication expected of a serious Sōsaku-hanga work.

Morimura has held numerous solo exhibitions in Japan and the United States and is a long-time participant in the prestigious annual CWAJ Print Show in Tokyo, with over 20 appearances to his name. His prints are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Yale University; and the University of Maryland.

Condition: Printed on hand-made washi with deckled edges; fresh colours; no restoration observed.

Medium : Multi-color oil-based relief print on kozo (mulberry bark) washi paper
Edition : 16/50
Date. : 1998 Dimensions: 59 × 43 cm (23¼ × 16⅞ in.) — image; sheet slightly larger Signature : Signed in pencil lower right; artist’s red seal; title and date inscribed lower left in Japanese (月山 ’98 乙)
Country of origin: Japan

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ray Morimura was born in Tokyo in 1948 and graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University. Initially he embarked on his career as a painter, experimenting with abstract and geometric forms, before transitioning to woodblock printmaking. He was inspired by master artists Hatsuyama Shigeru and Kawakami Sumio, and began studying woodblock techniques from that foundation. He has taught at Tokyo Zokei University and Nihon Kogakuin College, contributing to the education of a new generation of Japanese artists.

A NOTE ON THE TITLE

The kanji inscription 月山 (Gassan, lit. “Moon Mountain”) in the lower margin confirms the title.
