A rare and striking example of Ingo Maurer’s boundless imagination, the Mozzkito table lamp (1996) merges poetic lightness with technological playfulness. Combining stainless steel, fine red wiring, and delicate antenna-like rods radiating from a glowing bulb, this sculptural piece captures Maurer’s fascination with the fusion of art, light, and movement.
Balanced on a minimal base, the long, slender arm extends gracefully to support the lamp head — a luminous “creature” that seems to hover in midair. The whimsical design evokes the essence of a curious insect drawn to light, embodying Maurer’s belief that illumination should inspire emotion as well as function.
Now considered one of his iconic late-20th-century creations, Mozzkito perfectly illustrates the designer’s mastery of balance, tension, and humor — a true collector’s piece for lovers of avant-garde lighting design.
About Ingo Maurer (1932–2019)
Often called the “poet of light,” German designer Ingo Maurer redefined lighting through experimentation, wit, and artistry. After studying graphic design and working in the United States, he founded his Munich-based studio in 1966, producing visionary creations such as the Bulb (1966), Lucellino (1992), and Zettel’z (1997). Maurer’s works blur the boundaries between design and sculpture, and many are part of major museum collections worldwide, including MoMA and the Vitra Design Museum.
His lamps invite wonder — transforming everyday objects and simple bulbs into expressions of emotion and imagination.
