“Massa Continua,” carved in 1999 by Italian sculptor Alberto Cabiddu, distills mass and movement into a single continuous gesture. Two interlocking volumes twist through one another in soft, biomorphic curves, opening a square negative space at their center — the sculpture’s title, “continuous mass,” speaks directly to this sense of unbroken flow between solid and void. Worked from Pietra di Vicenza, the honey-toned Italian limestone historically used in Palladian architecture, the piece pairs an almost architectural monumentality with an intimate, tabletop scale.

Compact and self-possessed at H. 17 x W. 24 x D. 24 cm (H. 6.7 x W. 9.4 x D. 9.4 in.), “Massa Continua” reads as a maquette for a much larger public work, while standing entirely on its own as a sculptural object — equally at home on a console, plinth, or shelf.

Alberto Cabiddu, born in Geneva in 1966, found his way to sculpture after relocating to the province of Vicenza in 1987, where he began working the local stone alongside marble, wood, and clay, studying under sculptor Agostino Gallio and ceramicist Antonio Visentin. Largely self-taught, Cabiddu has spent decades refining an abstract vocabulary rooted in Vicenza’s stone-carving tradition — his forms often draw comparison to Barbara Hepworth and Constantin Brâncuși for their balance of geometric clarity and organic minimalism. For much of his career he chose not to sell his work, developing it in solitude; pieces like this one have only recently become available to collectors.

The sculpture will be shipped insured overseas in a custom made wooden crate. Cost of transport to the US, Euro 375, is crate included.
