“Hida House” — Koichi Maeda, 1993, limited edition woodblock print 4/80, original Japanese frame

A quietly atmospheric Japanese woodblock print by Koichi Maeda (b. 1936, Tokyo), titled “Hida no Ie” (Hida House). Executed in the traditional moku hanga technique, the composition captures the weathered timber façade of a traditional merchant house in Japan’s mountainous Hida region — known for its well-preserved Edo-period townscapes. Maeda renders the sagging tiled eaves, latticed shōji screens, and indigo noren-style signage in a rich, muted palette of charcoal, moss green, and gold, with warm interior light glowing behind paper windows. The composition is characteristic of Maeda’s mature style: a naturalistic yet quietly romantic treatment of vernacular Japanese architecture, in the lineage of Kawase Hasui, evoking stillness and the passage of time rather than any single narrative moment.

Numbered 4/80, titled, dated (’93), and signed in pencil by the artist in the lower margin — all in his own hand, per traditional shin-hanga/moku hanga convention. The print retains its original Japanese frame, adding provenance and period character.

Koichi Maeda has been active since 1961, when he first exhibited with the Japan Print Association at just 25 years old. His landscapes and depictions of old villages and houses are held in respect for their atmospheric color blending and compositional harmony, and are frequently featured in the annual CWAJ print exhibitions in Japan. Outside Japan, his work remains relatively scarce, making signed and numbered examples like this one particularly desirable for collectors of 20th-century Japanese prints.

Returns

If you wish to return your item from outside the EU, you are entitled to do so if this is communicated within 3 days of arrival. The client is liable for repackaging and shipment back to the warehouse in the Netherlands. All costs involved, transport both ways, insurance, custom made wooden crate, custom handling cost and VAT, must be paid by the customer.
