Carved in 1997 from Pietra di Vicenza — the honey-toned Italian limestone quarried in the Colli Berici and prized since the Renaissance for its fine grain and warmth — “Frammento” is a compact, totemic column built from stacked cylindrical forms pierced by voids of varying scale. The rhythm of solid and hollow, large ring giving way to small, reads almost like a set of architectural fragments assembled into a single vertical gesture, echoing the modular language of Brancusi’s columns filtered through a distinctly Italian, tactile hand.

Alberto Cabiddu works stone the way an architect thinks about mass and light: each drilled aperture catches shadow differently depending on the angle of view, giving the piece a shifting silhouette as you move around it — true of much of his abstract output, but especially pronounced in a work this size, meant for close, intimate viewing rather than a grand hall.

About the artist:

Alberto Cabiddu was born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1966. He discovered a passion for art at age ten, encouraged by a teacher who noticed his talent, though music dominated his teenage years before drawing pulled him back around eighteen, leading him through courses in Paris and Geneva. In 1987 he settled in the province of Vicenza, where he fell for sculpture and began experimenting with the local stone alongside marble, wood, and clay. Largely self-taught, he studied informally with sculptor Agostino Gallio and ceramicist Antonio Visentin. Cabiddu’s practice today centers on abstract, architecturally-minded stone sculpture — modular, geometric forms that draw comparisons to Brancusi, Nevelson, and Noguchi, while remaining rooted in the specific material culture of Vicenza’s quarries, the same stone Palladio built with centuries earlier.

Frammento will be shipped insured overseas in a custom made wooden crate. Cost of transport to the US, Euro 375, is crate included.
